Do you suffer from frequent episodes of Low Back Pain?
We offer a 1-hour physiotherapy 'Low Back Pain Maintenance' treatment session specifically designed to help reduce the frequency and severity of your painful episodes.
Who may benefit?
Frequent episodes of low back pain has many causes. These may include generally poor conditioning of the spine, muscle stiffness with ‘trigger points’, low levels of activity, stress and other lifestyle factors. Your low back pain may also be due to a degree of 'wear and tear' of the spine, what is medically referred to as spondylosis or osteoarthrosis of the spine.
Recurrent episodic mechanical low back pain can be well managed with intermittent 'maintenance' physiotherapy sessions.
Our team of Chartered Physiotherapists have designed this 1-hour treatment session to assist you in the management of this type of low back pain with the intention of reducing how often and how severely the episodes occur.
In addition these sessions are helpful to maintain movement and function of the spine, its supporting muscles and nerves. This is necessary to maintain your level of physical function so you may continue activities and sports such as golf, walking, swimming and cycling in years to come.
What's involved in this 1-hour treatment session?
A typical low back maintenance session will include a combination of gentle hands-on spinal and nerve mobilisation as required, as well as techniques for releasing tension and tightness in the muscles.
Your Physiotherapist may suggest including Medical Acupuncture and/or dry needling in your treatment.
Research evidence shows Acupuncture to be effective in managing low back pain as well as deactivating myofascial trigger points, the exquisite tender points which can be found in the muscles of the low back and buttocks.
If indicated, heat as well as different types of electrotherapy may also be used to help ease pain and muscle tension.
Your Physiotherapist will also offer you proper guidance on suitable exercises you can do to help maintain mobility and strength in your spine.
How often will I need this treatment?
How often you require treatment depends on how severe and how often you have episodes of low back pain. For clients recently starting these maintenance sessions it is best to return before your pain normally re-occurs, usually within 4-6 weeks depending on the individual. With effective treatment we aim to extend these periods before needing to return. Ideally, over time, this results in an ability to self-manage your back with no or minimal need for further treatment.

Maintenance sessions are not suitable for those with specific spinal pathology such as tumours, infections, fractures, inflammatory or autoimmune diseases.
